Used Book Stores in Penang

Used book stores in Penang are places that I have almost erased from mind. Once upon a time ago, I was a heavy-user for used books due to budget constraint. Coping with the last two years in high school was exhausting. These hectic days not only demanded loads effort and time but also money! Yep, I had never spent so much on reference books before. To source for inexpensive books, I frequented a spot on Love Lane in George Town. To identify this nameless place, my classmates and I called it 'Ah Pek'  (literally means 'Uncle' in Hokkien -  a local dialect) Seond-Hand Book Store. A tiny shack on the edge of the street near Chulia Street's 7-Eleven, Ah Pek traded purely reference books. He bought used books, acted as the middle man to store and re-sell. Situated behind our alma mater, it made our visits pretty convenience after school.
Used books
Chowrasta Market in Penang Road is another popular place for budgeted students, travelers or heavy-duty readers. From used Lonely Planet series, Dan Brown, Mill & Boon, university reference material, school textbooks to lifestyle and collectible magazines, these used book stores is located on the first floors of Chowrasta Market. Books are offered in tonnes, piling from floor to ceiling, occupying every single inch on shelves inside the shops and spilling out along the corridor/walkway! Some do offer new books at bargain as well. To avoid the wet market on ground floor, reach the side staircase of this heritage building, it leads straight to the used book stores. The only downside is you have to afford a lot of time (and sweat) browsing for what you want. Some perhaps say they collect heaps of junk, but I must defend that these book stores in Penang are like buried gems for book devotees.

If you're looking for Malaysian pre-school or school children reference/text books, high chances you may find them at the local bookstores in Carnavon Street. Quaint, family-owned business, these bookstores have been around for at least more 30 years ago. They also provide stationery supplies at reasonable price. This is to give you an option aside from the modern book stores chain such as Popular, MPH and Borders.

Used Book Store in Penang Island Plaza

The most recent used book store that I visited is Leo Bookstore at Island Plaza. Located at the first floor in the commercial complex of Tanjung Tokong neighborhood, beside used books Leo Bookstore also features new books and publisher's remainders. Stacks of book, completely filled up shelves and compact. The store is not huge but tidy. It also offers a reasonable selection of young children books including the second-hand books from Peter and Jane at a slash of price. In fact, most of them look pretty okay.

People say 'Like father, like son'. Perhaps. My SO and I love reading. And we sense that we have a little follower! We invested in Nook (from B&N), a tablet and a few pairs of headset (audio books) for ourselves but the little one is not ready for these toys yet. Or more accurate to say that I prefer the old-fashioned way to introduce reading to this little guy :). Began with staring at cloth books when he wasn't even rolled over, he then moved on to flip tiny books and now he is reaching for every books in our house including a Toddler's Bible (we are glad for that!). I am pretty sure that soon we are going to run out of budget! Borrowing books from Penang libraries is a good option and revisiting these used book stores in Penang is another.

Hi! Sorry to trouble you but would like to ask you a few questions about Chowrasta 2nd hand bookstores. I am from KL and just recently found out about Chowrasta. I love books but am looking for specific ones, namely:

1. Specific books on Asian and/or Malaysian & Singapore history especially those on business, stock markets and investing.

2. Old Dynaquest Stock Market Performance Books in the 1980s to 1990s or KLSE Companies Handbooks (you know, those that summarize companies financial statements) for a couple of years...

Did you recall whether the Chowrasta book vendors stocked up any of these books during your visits there? Just wanted to know whether it's worth going to check it out. I would really appreciate your assistance.

Many thanks smilies/cheesy.gif

Thanks for replying.

I'm a bookworm, so it's quite unbelievable I've never heard of this place until recently. Quite a difficult task to even find email/hp contact of these vendors... like they don't want to be found smilies/sad.gif

Definitely will want to drop by when I visit Penang smilies/smiley.gif
