Located about 9 miles east from Johnson City in Texas Hill Country, Pedernales Falls offers a clear spring-
fed river and lovely waterfalls over the slope of limestone.
Welcome to Pedernales Falls Park Headquarters
The highlight of this park is the Pedernales River which one may swim in the river, wade water or even engage in tubing but this place has more than that for nature enthusiasts. Hiking trails are plenty, mountain biking is also possible, bird watching and also horse riding! Although this park is not known as 'fishing' park, anglers are frequently spotted as well.
Poor man's landscape stitches - Pedernales Falls (Johnson City)
We arrived at the park almost evening after our tour at LBJ Boyhood Home and LBJ Ranch. Without much ado, we proceeded to the ultimate must-see at the park - Pedernales Falls!
At viewing platform, overlooking Cypress Pool scenic area
Shadows of the carved limestone on the calm water
The park road led us right to the parking bay at the north end. After several yards on foot, we reached the viewing platform. From this point, the sight of cascading falls is beautiful. The river water drops about 50 feet over a distance of 3000 feet creating a stair-step effect of layered limestone. Cool breeze weaving and the music of the water falling is soothing.

Swimming is not allowed here but alright somewhere downstream
Extraordinary shapes and sizes
From this area, I hiked down the rugged terrain descending to the river bank. The downstream of Pedernales River features an interesting view whereby the limestone here were carved in asymmetrical shapes yet resembling bowls, contains the river's water, forming what people call 'Cypress Pool'. These river limestone have a very long history indeed, originated from the flank of Llano uplift, then eroded and covered by Cretaceous seas before appearing like that we see today!
