Claimed as Taiwan's natural heritage, Yehliu Geopark is a little gem that sits 15 km from Keelung harbor in northern Formosa. Featuring a dynamic limestone rock evolution, Yehliu is a scenic natural area that simply take your breath away!

As detailed in our Yehliu Geopark Adventure - Part 1, the blend of weathering, earth movement and sea erosion had resulted a majestic landscape of Yehliu, creating the rocks of unique shapes and amazing formations namely honeycomb, candlestick, ginger, pot hole and bean curd.

After one has completed touring the ridge area (where The Queen's Head is located), there is another section that is worth to peek. This shoreline can hardly be missed as it is predominantly occupied by a number of mushroom, honeycomb and ginger rocks.
Picturesque nature of Yehliu Geological Park
Honeycomb Rock is easily recognized with numerous tiny holes on the rock surface. In the ecology of coastline, sea creatures tend to adhere to the rock surface. These creatures produces acidic secretion and eventually weaken the rock surface. Coupled with the attack from sodium rich sea water, the rock surface is eroded deeper in different sizes, creating the outlook of honeycomb.

Structured similar to mushroom rock, ginger rock comprises a layer of concentrated calcium carbonate in the shape of ginger roots. Due to erosion, the fragile edges are gone and the remain gives the appearance that resemble the ginger roots.

Bizarre rock formation that is conical in shape with a wick on top is Candle Rock. These Candlestick rocks that sit on the opposite end (south-west) from the entrance (of this section) give a mesmerizing landscape. One of its kind, Candle Rock is another highlight and trademark of Yehliu besides the famous Queen's Head. The wicks on the so-called candlesticks are rich in calcium carbonate, possess higher weathering and erosion resistance than the bodies of the candlesticks which resulted them to remain.

Every piece of the rock here holds a charm of its own and speaks for itself. Gazing at them is the prize of my trip to Taiwan!
