Pulau Betong Pantai Pasir Panjang If you're tired of the over crowded beaches in Batu Feringghi, then check out the Penang's Long Beach or Pantai Pasir Panjang in Pulau Betong. Similar to his cousin Pulau Tikus, it is not an isle of its own despite preceding with the word 'Pulau'. Aside from exploring a new idyllic beach to have fun, it is also great alternative when it comes to picnic by the beach.

Pantai Pasir Panjang or literally translated as Sandy Long Beach in English is kind of self explanatory. This thin strip is only a few meters in width, the home to white sparkling sand, tiny crabs and pines. It occupies a stretch over a kilometer (I think), sits adjacent to Kem Bina Negara (Nation Building Camp) Balik Pulau at Pulau Betong. Located on the south western tip of Penang island, Pantai Pasir Panjang is precisely situated at the cul-de-sac of an unnamed road branching from Jalan Bahru (P237) near Pulau Betong fishing village (coordinates of Kem Bina Negara Balik Pulau: 5.300365,100.184644).

For folks who are foreign to this sanctuary, it is good to visit either in the morning or early evening. The beach is also the seabed during high tide. If you drive there for a lunch picnic, it is likely that you have to eat in your car instead. The high tide phenomenon that usually occurs around noon tends to flood the beach access, thus we dismissed as soon as the waves hit above our buffer area .
Secluded and a quiet beach at which means no frills. No eateries and no facilities. There is a watch tower on Pantai Pasir Panjang but no life guard on duty. Everything is on your own including life-saving/paramedic and First Aid Kits. You can hardly find a civilized public bathroom/toilet nearby unless you befriend with the security personnel of the camp to allow you entering into their premise. Or, drop by the Chinese coffee shop at Pulau Betong fishing village.

An 'exclusive' beach with high privacy, it offers you and your family the whole strip or perhaps sharing with only a handful families. Building sand castles, watching the waves, chasing tiny crabs or collecting shells, the best words to describe are quaint and tranquil. I could stay on the beach for the whole day just with a book. Take note, the phone line coverage is pathetic at Pulau Betong. Ain't sure if you can access to internet with broadband via smart phone. That's said, Pantai Pasir Panjang Penang is a great spot to take away your stress by connecting to Mother nature (and disconnect from the world both physically and virtually )
