I received a text saying that Penang has its own Sakura! Now blossoming with whole tree full of flowers in color hues of dark pink, light pink and white. Dark pink is very beautiful. Wear a hat and take a picture under the tree just like you are in Japan!
Having said that, do not confuse with the famous Sakura or Cherry Blossom in Japan. They are not Cherry Blossom, but just being nick-named as Penang Sakura owing to its pink color that resembled the flowers of Cherry Blossom which also blooming in spring between February and March.

The so-called 'Penang Sakura' Street is located exactly at the entrance of Sunway Tunas Bayan Baru, along a stretch of Persiaran Mahsuri from PISA (Penang International Sports Arena) to Pantai Mutiara Hospital. In mainland, the flowering trees are growing in abundance within the vicinity of Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam.
Scientifically called as Tabebuia Rosea, the 'Penang Sakura' is claimed as the first time flowering in Penang and had in fact captured our attention! Also known as Pink Tecoma or Rosy Trumpet tree, this species is native in Central and South America at the tropical belt. Commonly found growing from sealevel to 1,200 m (3,937 ft), in temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C on average, with annual rainfall above 500 mm, and on soils with very variable pH (Wikipedia ~ Tabebuia Rosea).
When I passed by 'Penang Sakura Street' on 21 March 2009 (armed with a camera), some of the leaves had turned yellow. They were dropping, with lesser flowers on the tree as day goes. Prime period where these Rosy Trumpet flower blooming is almost over.
If you miss seeing them, these trumpet flowers will greet us again soon. Being lucky, perhaps we can have another mesmerizing view in the mid year as it was observed flowering in April, May, August and September especially during dry periods.
Otherwise, let us keep our fingers crossed - they will be back blooming again in spring next year!
