Biking has gradually became a life-style in Penang. Even the outlets that sell gym equipments and Ace Hardware in shopping malls are displaying bicycles for sale! Despite the upsides, one of the challenges to bike safely in Penang is the route. In the present practice, bikers have to share roads with motorized vehicles to access most places. That's said, the massive motorized vehicles that congest the roads at times place the bikers at disadvantage being tiny comparatively, in addition to minimal biking safety measures.

Frankly, the traffic in Penang always make me think twice when it comes to biking particularly taking a child out on bike. My SO used to cycle to work a couple years ago but he had to stop after moving to a new office that is considerably less safe to bike. I had left my bike untouched since my child was born. Being a full time mom, who tell you that you have the luxury to bike? Of course, I'm just kidding!

If you live in Penang and reading is your favorite thing, Seberang Jaya Penang Library is a place that you must visit - at least once in a lifetime! Residing across the sea on the beautiful resort island is not a good excuse, neither the distance that you might claim 'too far'. To bridge the distance in your mind, you can math out this way. On a good day, circling around the island of Penang takes less than two hours, so even you live at the furthest point from Penang Bridge, it is only an hour away. If you live next to Penang Bridge, this sounds like a bonus. The journey on the bridge is merely 10-15 minutes, then continuing on North-South Highway entering into Seberang Jaya township takes less than 10 minutes.

How To Get to Seberang Jaya - Penang State Public Library?

Two options. One, tell your GPS this is the coordinates: 5.391975,100.398869. Don't panic if you don't own a GPS, there is a second option here. Presumably you're coming from Penang via Penang Bridge, continue driving on North-South Highway, on the direction heading north, as if to Sungai Petani or Alor Setar. Until you have passed Carrefour and Seberang Jaya Hospital (on your right), then take the far left road connecting to a roundabout. Enter the direction at 9 o'clock on Butterworth-Kulim Highway. Less than a few hundred meters, right after Caltex gas station, take a left turn into Seberang Jaya township. Travel on Jalan Todak 4, then continue on Lebuh Tenggiri 2. Once you see FMM, take the left turn into Jalan Perpustakaan. You will see EPF building and Tenaga Nasional before arriving at Perbadanan Perpustakaan Awam Pulau Pinang. Not many Penang islanders are aware, parking at MPSP (Seberang Prai Local Council) zone usually requires pre-paid parking coupon. Seberang Jaya has no escape so get the pre-paid parking coupons ready before you need them. If not, be ready to greet enforcement officer on-duty. However, this scenario typically applies to road side parking bays, not the internal ones within library's premise. Some roads in Seberang Jaya are one-way traffic, at which otherwise the township is pretty simple to navigate.

This harvest celebration is officially the Mid Autumn Festival because it falls in the autumn on the fifteenth day of eighth month in Lunar calendar, pretty closes to autumnal equinox! Not many eateries in Penang offer scrumptious mango sticky rice, but this little Thai's Khao Niaow Ma Muang deserves to be highlighted. Their sticky rice is soft, blends perfectly with the creamy coconut milk sauce and ripe mango is simply delicious, and cost less than RM5!

Used Book Stores in Penang

Used book stores in Penang are places that I have almost erased from mind. Once upon a time ago, I was a heavy-user for used books due to budget constraint. Coping with the last two years in high school was exhausting. These hectic days not only demanded loads effort and time but also money! Yep, I had never spent so much on reference books before. To source for inexpensive books, I frequented a spot on Love Lane in George Town. To identify this nameless place, my classmates and I called it 'Ah Pek' (literally means 'Uncle' in Hokkien - a local dialect) Seond-Hand Book Store. A tiny shack on the edge of the street near Chulia Street's 7-Eleven, Ah Pek traded purely reference books. He bought used books, acted as the middle man to store and re-sell. Situated behind our alma mater, it made our visits pretty convenience after school.

Chowrasta Market in Penang Road is another popular place for budgeted students, travelers or heavy-duty readers. From used Lonely Planet series, Dan Brown, Mill & Boon, university reference material, school textbooks to lifestyle and collectible magazines, these used book stores is located on the first floors of Chowrasta Market. Books are offered in tonnes, piling from floor to ceiling, occupying every single inch on shelves inside the shops and spilling out along the corridor/walkway! Some do offer new books at bargain as well. To avoid the wet market on ground floor, reach the side staircase of this heritage building, it leads straight to the used book stores. The only downside is you have to afford a lot of time (and sweat) browsing for what you want. Some perhaps say they collect heaps of junk, but I must defend that these book stores in Penang are like buried gems for book devotees.

Not that we are big fans of public library but when we're in TX, Milwood Branch Public Library at Amherst Drive was like our second H.E.B. store. Not for groceries shopping obviously but borrowing so-called 'learning' materials mostly books, sometimes CDs and DVDs, almost every week. And it was just a stone throw from where we lived that made it pretty convenience.

Back in Penang, we always think twice before making a trip to library. Never stepped into any of them for more than a decade, the first two queries that jumped into our mind were 'where are they now?' and 'what are their operating days/hours?'. Asking Google is like an automatic reaction, at which uncover brilliant information about Penang public library.

Aside from Penang public library branches, there are 3 reading sanctuaries provided in shopping malls namely AEON Seberang Prai City at Bandar Perda, Bayan Baru Mayang Mall Cyber Library and KOMTAR Cyber Library. I am aware of the mobile libraries running in the state as I had seen there before, and they actually have 12 coaches to serve particularly in rural areas.
