Brown Bear or scientifically known as Ursus arctos, is relatively a large bear among its species. Excel in sprinting whereby a Brown Bear can run at speeds of 57 km/h for short distances.
Brown Bears are found primarily in Northern Hemisphere especially Northern Alaska, Canada, Russia and Finland. They tend to attack human especially when their cubs are being threaten or in danger.
Bearing about 90 odds sub-species, Brown Bear may look slightly different based on different geographical regions. Among the famous sub-species or hybrids are Grizzly Bear (I once caught a glimpse of Black Grizzly at dusk during a weekend trip to Yellowstone, WY!) found in Yellowstone National Park, Gobi Bear in Mongolia and Kodiak Bear in Alaska.

An adult Brown Bear can be taller than human at standing posture, on average height between 1.7m to 2.8m and weight ranging from 90kg to 150kg on average. The larger sub-species like Kodiak Bear can reach more than 1000kg.
To distinguish Brown Bear from other bear species, their head are round with a concave face similar to the common 'teddy' bears sold as toys. With its body of furry coats in blond, brown or black, Brown Bear tends to have a large hump over its shoulder - an attribute that clearly differentiate it from its other species.
Being an omnivore, it relies on fruits, flowers, insects, fish and smaller mammals as food. Food is scarce during winter so most of their time will be spent sleeping or hibernating.
The mating season is during the summer in North Hemisphere, between May to July. The female Brown Bear of the average age 5 to 7 years old can reproduce after 6 months of delayed implantation process plus 8 weeks of gestation period provided the conceiving is successful. If otherwise happen, embryo will be reabsorbed into the female body and this happen usually when the female does not gain sufficient weight during winter. Isn't this unique, definitely something I didn't learn in school!
